The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from *ձեղ- (*jeł-, log (supporting the ceiling)), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₁-el-, and connected with ձող (joł) and Georgian ძელი (ʒeli).
