From Old Georgian ძელი(ʒeli), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *ʒ₁el-. Cognate with Mingrelian ჯა(ǯa, tree) and Laz ჯა(ǯa, tree). Compare also Old Armenian ձեղուն(jełun).
