Etymology[edit]

Of Semitic origin, probably Classical Syriac. Compare Classical Syriac ܙܝܬܐ (zaytāʼ, olive), absolute form ܙܝܬ (zēθ), Arabic زيت (zait, oil), زيتون (zaytūn, olive) (whence զեյթուն (zeytʿun)), Hebrew זית (zayith, olive).
