Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is յաւդ (yawd), from Proto-Indo-European *audʰ-, grown from *au-, *eu- (to wear; to tie up). Cognate with Lithuanian auklis (rope), autas (foot-cloth), Latvian aukle (cord, rope). Akin to ագանիմ (aganim) and օթ (ōtʿ).
