Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is յաւդ ‎(yawd), from Proto-Indo-European *audʰ-, grown from *au-, *eu- ‎(to wear; to tie up). Cognate with Lithuanian auklis ‎(rope), autas ‎(foot-cloth), Latvian aukle ‎(cord, rope). Akin to ագանիմ ‎(aganim) and օթ ‎(ōtʿ).
