According to Martirosyan, a nursery word possibly of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European origin. Compare Persian نانا (nānā, mother, mamma), Shughni на̄н (nān, mother; grandmother), Khotanese [script needed] (nāni, mother), Sanskrit नना (nanā́-, mother, mum), Serbo-Croatian nana, nena (mother), Ancient Greek νάννη (nánnē, aunt), Albanian nënë (mother), Welsh nain (grandmother), etc.
