Old Armenian

Etymology

Wholly borrowed from an unattested term, composed of the etymon of նկար (nkar) and a suffix going back to Proto-Iranian *-ayHnah. Compare Persian نگارین (negârin, “painted, coloured”).

1. painted, coloured, variegated, varied with many colours
2. embellished with imagery
