Etymology

From շուն (šun, dog) +‎ -ա- (-a-) +‎ ձուկ (juk, fish). Compare English dogfish and Ancient Greek θαλάττιος κύων (thaláttios kúōn, sea dog), both referring to one of the types of shark.
