From Old Armenian չ- (čʻ-).

չ- (čʻ-)

  1. a negative particle appended to the verb to form the negative conjugation of all moods, except the imperative mood
    չ- (čʻ-) + ‎սիրել (sirel, to like) → ‎չսիրել (čʻsirel, not to like)
    չ- (čʻ-) + ‎գրեցի (grecʻi, I wrote) → ‎չգրեցի (čʻgrecʻi, I did not write)
  2. A negative prefix, appended to some verb roots
    չ- (čʻ-) + ‎բերել (berel, to bring) → ‎չբեր (čʻber, non-bringing, barren)

Usage notes[edit]

As a negative prefix (sense 2) this is not productive anymore.
