From earlier *պատսաճ ‎(*patsač), from Middle Persian [script needed] ‎(patsač), composed of the prefix [script needed] ‎(pat-, against, with respect to) and the root [script needed] ‎(sač-)․ Compare Avestan [script needed] ‎(paiti-sač), Old Persian [script needed] ‎(pati-sač). For the root [script needed] ‎(sač-) compare Middle Persian [script needed] ‎(sačitan, to be suited, worthy) and Persian سزیدن ‎(sazīdan, to fit, suit).
