From earlier *պատսաճ (*patsač), from Middle Persian [script needed] (patsač), composed of the prefix [script needed] (pat-, against, with respect to) and the root [script needed] (sač-)․ Compare Avestan [script needed] (paiti-sač), Old Persian [script needed] (pati-sač). For the root [script needed] (sač-) compare Middle Persian [script needed] (sačitan, to be suited, worthy) and Persian سزیدن (sazīdan, to fit, suit).
