Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Pokorny with doubt lists under the root *ḱel- (thin shaft, stalk), following Scheftelowitz linking the word with such cognates as Sanskrit शल (ṡalá, staff; dart, spear), शलल (ṡalala, quill of a porcupine), शिल (ṡila, ear of corn), Ancient Greek κῆλον (kêlon, arrow, projectile), Lithuanian šìlas (coniferous forest); -արթ (-artʻ)/-արդ (-ard) then would be a suffix. This is rejected by Ačaṙyan but accepted by J̌ahukyan.

Noun

  1. leaf, leafy branch
  2. (figuratively) long hair
