Old Armenian

Etymology

A modern word of uncertain origin. Ačaṙyan records first usage in 1780s.[1]

Perhaps of onomatopoeic origin, from the sound made when sipping coffee.[2][3] Typologically compare Hungarian szürcsöl (to slurp, sip), of onomatopoeic origin. Folk etymology explains as սեւ (sew, black) + ջուր (ǰur, water).
