Etymology[edit]

A borrowing from a South-Western Iranian word of the form *vard(a)-pet (literally master of students or master of work). The first part is ultimately from Proto-Iranian *warĵ- (note especially Old Persian *vard- (to work)), the second from *pati-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pátis.

Doublet of վարժ (varž), վարձ (varj) and գործ (gorc).
