From Middle Persian *varti ‎(trousers), from the root *var- ‎(to cover), +‎ ‎(-kʿ). This root is also found in Persian شلوار ‎(šal-var). See also անդրավարտիք ‎(andravartikʿ) and սաղաւարտ ‎(saławart).
