Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *déḱm̥. The -ա- (-a-) instead of -ե- (-e-) is often explained by an assimilation of *տեսան (*tesan) to տասան (tasan), but according to Martirosyan it should rather be explained by the zero-grade ordinal *dḱm̥to-.
