Etymology

[edit]

The original spelling is ցաւղուն (cʻawłun), of uncertain origin. Has been considered an inheritance from Proto-Indo-European, as a cognate of Ancient Greek καλάμη (kalámē) or of Latin caulis and Ancient Greek καυλός (kaulós), but there are phonetic irregularities in both cases.
