Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The root is փուչ- ‎(pʿučʿ-), from Proto-Indo-European *pʰu-. Cognates include Persian پوک ‎(pūk), پکیدن ‎(pokidan, to blow, to die), Ancient Greek φῦσα ‎(phûsa, bellows), Latin pustula, Russian пыхать ‎(pyxatʹ). Related to փուք ‎(pʿukʿ).

փչեմ ‎(pʿčʿem)  (aorist indicative փչեցի)

  1. to blow, to breathe
    հողմն փչէ‎ ― hołmn pʿčʿē ― the wind blows
  2. to swell, to inflate
  3. to expire; to die
    փչել զհոգին‎ ― pʿčʿel zhogin ― to expire, to die
