From օձ(ōj) +‎ -ա-(-a-) +‎ մարտնչիմ(martnčʿim), translating Ancient Greek ὀφιομάχος(ophiomákhos, fighting with serpents; locust; ichneumon), from ὄφις(óphis, serpent) + μάχομαι(mákhomai, to fight).
