From օձ (ōj) +‎ -ա- (-a-) +‎ մարտնչիմ (martnčʻim), calque of Ancient Greek ὀφιομάχος (ophiomákhos, fighting with serpents; locust; ichneumon), from ὄφις (óphis, serpent) + μάχομαι (mákhomai, to fight).
