From Middle High German agrāz, from Medieval Latin agresta (unripe fruit, verjuice), likely applied to the gooseberry due to its sour taste. Compare Austro-Bavarian Ogrosl (gooseberry).

Alternatively, borrowed from Polish agrest (gooseberry), from the same Latin source.
