Etymology

[edit]
Root
א־ל־ל (ʾ-l-l)
2 terms

Uncertain; doublet of אֵלוֹן (elón), which possibly is the native Canaanite counterpart, compare Aramaic אִילָנָא (ʾīlānā, tree) and Classical Syriac ܐܺܝܠܳܢܳܐ (ʾīlānā, tree). The present form with a short /a/ and a geminated /l/ on the other hand may be a borrowing from Akkadian 𒀠𒆷𒀭 (ʾallānu, alyānu, oak; acorn). For a similar situation see אֵלָה (elá) and אַלָּה (alá).
