[edit]- אֵלוֹן (elón)
Etymology
[edit]Uncertain; doublet of אֵלוֹן (elón), which possibly is the native Canaanite counterpart, compare Aramaic אִילָנָא (ʾīlānā, “tree”) and Classical Syriac ܐܺܝܠܳܢܳܐ (ʾīlānā, “tree”). The present form with a short /a/ and a geminated /l/ on the other hand may be a borrowing from Akkadian 𒀠𒆷𒀭 (ʾallānu, alyānu, “oak; acorn”). For a similar situation see אֵלָה (elá) and אַלָּה (alá).
