Etymology

From Proto-Semitic *ʾiš- (“fire”).

Noun

אֵשׁ • (esh) f (plural indefinite אִשִּׁים, singular construct אֵשׁ־, plural construct אִשֵּׁי־) [pattern: קֵטֶל]

1. (usually uncountable) Fire, a fire, a flame.
   • Tanach, Exodus 3:2:

     וַיֵּרָא מַלְאַךְ ה׳ אֵלָיו בְּלַבַּת אֵשׁ מִתּוֹךְ הַסְּנֶה וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה הַסְּנֶה בֹּעֵר בָּאֵשׁ וְהַסְּנֶה אֵינֶנּוּ אֻכָּל׃

   • אבינו מלכנו

     אָבִינוּ מַלְכֵּנוּ עֲשֵׂה לְמַעַן בָּאֵי בָּאֵשׁ וּבַמַּיִם עַל קִדּוּשׁ שְׁמֶךָ.

Usage notes

• The plural אִשִּׁים (ishím) is not used in Modern Hebrew.
