Etymology

[edit]

From Arabic هَنْدَسَة (handasa), from the same Iranic source as modern Persian اندازه (andâze, measuring).[1]

Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

הַנְדָּסָה (handasáf (plural indefinite הַנְדָּסוֹת, singular construct הַנְדָּסַת־)

  1. (dated or archaic) geometry.
    Synonym: גֵּאוֹמֶטְרְיָה (geométrya)
  2. (uncountable) engineering (the application of mathematics and the physical sciences to the needs of humanity and the development of technology)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Whereas in English, the noun engineering is frequently used attributively (as in “engineering applications”, “engineering mechanics”, and so on), in Hebrew, the noun הַנְדָּסָה is not usually used this way, the adjective הַנְדָּסִי (handasí) being used instead.
