Etymology

Uncertain; possibly comes from חָבַק (ḥāḇaq, “embrace”), from the root ח־ב־ק (“embrace”) or perhaps from Akkadian 𒄩𒄠𒁀𒄣𒄣 (ḫambaqūqu [ḫa-am-ba-qu-qu], “garden herb”).

1. Habakkuk: a Jewish prophet of the First Temple period, of whom little is known.
   • Habakkuk 1:1:

     הַמַּשָּׂא אֲשֶׁר חָזָה חֲבַקּוּק הַנָּבִיא׃

     hamasá ashér khazá khavakúk hanaví.

     The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

   • Habakkuk 3:1:

     תְּפִלָּה לַחֲבַקּוּק הַנָּבִיא עַל שִׁגְיֹנוֹת׃
