From the root ח־ק־ק‎ (kh-k-k), associated with חָקַק(khakák, to engrave, to etch; to ingrain, imprint). Compare Ge'ez ሕግ (ḥəgg, law), Classical Syriac ܚܘܩܐ(ḥuqqā, rule) Arabic حَقّ(ḥaqq, right), Tigrinya ሓቂ (ḥaqqi, truth).
