Etymology[edit]

From English Tasmania, ultimately from the name of Dutch naval explorer Abel Tasman, who visited and documented the island and New Zealand in 1642. The zayin reflects the English pronunciation, compare the variant with samekh, טאַסמאַניע (tasmanye).
