Inherited from Middle High German mezzen, from Old High German mezzen, from Proto-West Germanic *metan. Compare German messen. Insertion of ־ט־ (-t-) possibly occurred via /-sn̩-/ → /-sˀn̩-/ → /-sd̥n̩-/ → /-stn̩-/.
