Perhaps related to אֵפֶר ('éfer, ʾḗp̄er, ash). Compare Aramaic עַפְרָא (ʿap̄rā, dust) (absolutive: עֲפָר (ʿăp̄ār)), Arabic غَبَرَة (ḡabara)/غُبَار (ḡubār, dust) and (perhaps borrowed from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Aramaic) عَفَر (ʕafar, dust).
