[edit]Ultimately from Classical Persian آبی (ābī, “quince”), in turn from Classical Persian آب (āb, “water”) (as in 'a fruit that is watered manually, rather than by rain' (cf. دائمی (daimî, “watered by rain (and not by hand)”)).
