Arabic[edit]

أَوَانٍ

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Semitic. Compare Hebrew אֳנִיָּה(ʾŏnīyá, ship), Aramaic מָאנָא(mānā, vessel, container), Ugaritic 𐎀𐎐𐎊𐎚 (ảnyt, ship), Akkadian 𒃻𒄘𒈾 (/unūtu, anūtu/, household, palace; ship; utensils, instruments, tools, wares, gear), Ge'ez ንዋይ (nəway, vessel, utensil, instrument; goods, possessions, property, wealth, estate). It is generally assumed that there has been an accumulation of dissimilations in all these forms.
