Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (aspast), according to Horn, literally “fodder for horses”։ for the constituents see اسپ (asp, horse) and خوردن (xordan, to eat). Akkadian [script needed] (aspastu, an edible garden plant or an herb, perhaps alfalfa), Classical Syriac ܐܣܦܣܬܐ (ʾespestā, alfalfa) are probably borrowed from Iranian.
