Persian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Arabic أقل (ʔaqall, “less, least”), elative of قليل (qalīl, “little”). The use of the adverbial tanwin ending is a Persian innovation since the Arabic word is diptote and hence cannot take a tanwin.
Pronunciation[edit]
- (Classical Persian) IPA(key): [ʔa.qal.ˈlan]
- (Iran, formal) IPA(key): [ʔæ.ʁæl.lǽn]
- (Tajik, formal) IPA(key): [ʔä.qäl.lǽn]
