From Middle Persian 𐭠𐭭𐭥𐭱𐭪𐭩 ‎(anōšag, immortal), from 𐭥𐭱𐭪𐭩 ‎(anōš) + 𐭪𐭩 ‎(-ag), from Old Persian *anauša- ‎(immortal), from Proto-Iranian *an-auša- ‎(immortal). Akin to Avestan 𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬊𐬱𐬀 ‎(anaoša, immortal), Ossetian ӕнус ‎(ænus), and Old Armenian borrowing անուշակ ‎(anušak).
