Etymology

Literally, the House of the Holy Place, probably a calque of Aramaic ܒ݂ܶܝܬ݂ ܡܰܩܕ݁ܫܳܐ (beyt maqdšā) or Hebrew בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ (béit-hamikdásh).

      [] lammā faraḡa sulaymānu bnu dāwuda min bināʔi bayti l-maqdisi saʔala llāha ṯalāṯan ḥukman yuṣādifu ḥukmahu wamulkan lā yanbaḡī lʔaḥadin min baʕdihi waʔallā yaʔtiya haḏā l-masjida ʔaḥadun lā yurīdu ʔillā ṣ-ṣalāta fīhi ʔillā ḵaraja min ḏunūbihi kayawmi waladathu ʔummuhu
      [] When Solomon, the son of David, was done with building the Temple, he asked God for three things: a judiciousness with which His judiciousness would coincide, a kingdom that no one after him should ever have, and that none should ever come to that mosque who wishes only to pray therein unless they should slip afterwards out of their sins, like how they were on the day their mother bore them.

      [] فَقَالَ عِيسَىٰ إِنَّ ٱللهَ أَمَرَكَ بِخَمْسِ كَلِمَاتٍ لِتَعْمَلَ بِهَا وَتَأْمُرَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ أَنْ يَعْمَلُوا بِهَا فَإِمَّا أَنْ تَأْمُرَهُمْ وَإِمَّا أَنَا آمُرُهُمْ. فَقَالَ يَحْيَىٰ أَخْشَىٰ إِنْ سَبَقْتَنِي بِهَا أَنْ يُخْسَفَ بِي أَوْ أُعَذَّبَ فَجَمَعَ النَّاسَ فِي بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ فَامْتَلَأ الْمَسْجِدُ وَقَعَدُوا عَلَىٰ الشُّرَفِ []
