تَشَاءَمَ (tašāʔama) VI (non-past يَتَشَاءَمُ (yatašāʔamu), verbal noun تَشَاؤُم (tašāʔum))

  1. to be pessimistic [with مِنْ (min) or بِ (bi)]
    Antonym: تَفَاءَلَ (tafāʔala)
    • 1962, Ghassan Kanafani, رجال في الشمس [Men in the Sun]:
      لَيْسَ لِأَنَّ أُمَّهُ تَتَشَاءَمُ مِنَ ٱلْكَلِمَاتِ ٱلْمَشْطُوبَةِ فَقَطْ، بَلْ لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يُرِيدُ ذٰلِكَ أَيْضًا، وَبِبَسَاطَةٍ.
      laysa liʔanna ʔummahu tatašāʔamu mina l-kalimāti l-mašṭūbati faqaṭ, bal liʔannahu kāna lā yurīdu ḏālika ʔayḍan, wabibasāṭatin.
      Not only because his mother would see the crossed-out words as a bad omen, but also, quite simply, because he didn’t want to.
