Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Developed from the root ج ح ف (j-ḥ-f) meaning ”to draw a net closed”, “to capture”, “to carry off”, “to contract or pull close”, "to grapple”, “to tussle or contend physically”. Semantic development for a military unit influenced by Aramaic גוּפ (gawwēp, to join close, to set close together, to interlock shields), hence a group that fights side by side; compare Hebrew גּוּף (guf, corps, organization, institution).
