Persian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Iranian *xad- (“to beat, strike, inflict a wound, hurt”), of uncertain origin. Tentatively compared with Sanskrit कदन (kadana, “destruction”) and Ancient Greek κεκᾰδών (kekadṓn, “robbing”), though these come with phonetic difficulties.[1] Within Iranian, cognate with Khotanese khasta- (“beaten, pained”), Parthian xd- (xad-, “to injure”), xdm (xaδm, “wound”), etc.
