Persian

Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Persian hwʾstn' (xwāstan). Compare Old Armenian *խազ- (*xaz-), an Iranian borrowing.

Pronunciation

Template:fa-pronunciation

Verb

Dari خواستن
Iranian Persian
Tajik хостан

خواستن (xâstan) (present stem خواه (xâh))

  1. (auxiliary) to want (to do something)
  2. to want
  3. to intend

Usage notes

  • (auxiliary, to want): When خواستن is used as an auxiliary verb, the main verb is conjugated in the subjunctive/conditional. That is, both verbs are conjugated for person, so the resulting sentence has a verb clause that does not exist in the natural English translation. A literal reading of می‌خواهم بروم (mi-xâham beravam) / می‌خوام برم (mi-xâm beram, I want to go) is therefore, “I want [that] I go.”
