Etymology
From خوز (xuz, “Susia”) and ستان (stân, “place”), meaning land of the Khuzi (Susian) people, the original inhabitants of the region. Alternatively borrowed wholly from Middle Persian hwcstʾn' / 𐭧𐭥𐭰𐭮𐭲𐭭 (Hūzestān, literally “land of Hūz”), itself from hwc (Hūz) + -stʾn' (-estān, “-stan”).
The first component is from Old Persian 𐎢𐎺𐎩 (u-v-j /ʰūvja-/, “Elam, Elamite”), or from the name of Susa. Etymologically, compare اهواز, the Arabized broken-plural of Middle Persian hwc (Hūz, “Susia”).
