Location of Khuzestan within Iran

Etymology

From خوز (xuz, Susia) and ستان (stân, place), meaning land of the Khuzi (Susian) people, the original inhabitants of the region. Alternatively borrowed wholly from Middle Persian hwcstʾn' / 𐭧𐭥𐭰𐭮𐭲𐭭 (Hūzestān, literally land of Hūz), itself from hwc (Hūz) + -stʾn' (-estān, -stan).

The first component is from Old Persian 𐎢𐎺𐎩 (u-v-j /ʰūvja-/, Elam, Elamite), or from the name of Susa. Etymologically, compare اهواز, the Arabized broken-plural of Middle Persian hwc (Hūz, Susia).
