Persian[edit]
Alternative forms[edit]
- دیزه (deyze)
Etymology[edit]
From دا (dâ, “mother”) + ـزه (ze, “diminutive suffix”), literally “little mother, little mom”.
Or دا (dâ, “mother”) + ـزه (ze, “born”), then the second part is from زاییدن (zâyidan, “to born, to beget”). Compare typologically دایی (dâyi, “maternal uncle”).
This word is still used in Isfahan and other areas of Central Iran like Fars province and Yazd province.
Noun[edit]
دایزه • (dâyeze)
- (archaic or dialectal) maternal aunt (mother’s sister)
- Synonym: خاله (xâle)
