Etymology[edit]

From دیار (diyar), plural form of دار (dar, house; land, country), + بكر (bekr, bekir, Banu Bakr, an Arabian tribe), a name given after the Muslim conquest of the 7th century; before the conquest, the city was known as آمد (âmid) or قره آمد (kara âmid).
