Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the reduplicated root ز ح ز ح (z-ḥ-z-ḥ); compare زَعْزَعَ (zaʕzaʕa, to move violently; to shake; to destabilize).

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

زَحْزَحَ (zaḥzaḥa) Iq, non-past يُزَحْزِحُ‎ (yuzaḥziḥu)

  1. (transitive) to move away slightly, to push, to stir, to inch, to budge
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 2:96:
      يَوَدُّ أَحَدُهُمْ لَوْ يُعَمَّرُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ وَمَا هُوَ بِمُزَحْزِحِهِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ أَن يُعَمَّرَ
yawaddu ʔaḥaduhum law yuʕammaru ʔalfa sanatin wa-mā huwa bi-muzaḥziḥihī mina l-ʕaḏābi ʔan yuʕammara
Some [literally "one"] of them [would] wish that they were left [by Allah] to live a thousand years, and [yet] it would not inch them away from their [fated] torment that they be left to live.
