Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܣܘܿܦܝܺܣܛܳܐ (sōpisṭā, sophist) or its nisba derivation ܣܘܿܦܝܺܣܛܳܝܳܐ (sōp̄isṭāyā, sophistic) from Ancient Greek σοφιστής (sophistḗs) and +‎ ـَاء (-āʔ, feminine ending, sometimes for Aramaic emphatic state) +‎ ـِيّ (-iyy, nisba, expresses relation or pertinence).
