Etymology[edit]

Henning suggests a possible Sogdian root, citing the Christian Sogdian phrase snqs'r bw - 'to be stoned', where the second element would be the Sogdian directional postposition -sār as seen in words like mrts'r 'hither', 'skys'r 'upward', etc., although qualifying that "it is difficult to say whether [it has] been borrowed either from Persian or Sogdian, or whether [it is] common inheritance in both languages."
