Etymology[edit]

From a variant of the root ش ي ع (š-y-ʿ), meaning "to spread", "to sprout out", "to come forth"; compared to شَيْعَة (šayʿa, bush, short tree). Perhaps influenced by or directly borrowed from Hebrew שִׂיחַ (siakh, shoot, shrub); both roots are semantically parallel in other senses as well.
