Etymology

From the root ص م غ (ṣ-m-ḡ), a variant of س م ع (s-m-ʕ), both denoting sticky or thick fluids, flowing substances with lower viscosity than water, in a state between liquid and solid; compare شَمْع (šamʕ, “wax”).
