Ottoman Turkish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Arabic طَرَابُلُس الشَّام (ṭarābulus aš-šām, literally Tripoli of Syria), as opposed to طَرَابُلُس الغَرْب (ṭarābulus al-ḡarb, literally Tripoli of the West) (whence Ottoman Turkish طرابلس غرب (tarâbülüs-i garb)).
