Inherited from Proto-Turkic *turńa (crane); cognate with Old Turkic 𐱃𐰆𐰺𐰪𐰀 (turńa), Azerbaijani durna, Bashkir торна (torna), Chuvash тӑрна (tărna), Kazakh тырна (tyrna), Tatar торна (torna), Uzbek turna and Yakut туруйа (turuya).
