Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kapur- (rib); cognate with Azerbaijani qabırğa, Bashkir ҡабырға (qabırğa), Crimean Tatar qaburğa, Kazakh қабырға (qabyrğa), Kyrgyz кабырга (kabırga), Tatar кабырга (qabırga), Turkmen gapyrga, Uyghur قوۋۇرغا (qowurgha) and Uzbek qovurgʻa.
