Arabic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From شَبَكَة (šabaka, “net, grid”) within the root ش ب ك (š-b-k).
The interpretation of the pastry as a kind of latticework,[1] though it have a griddy structure, is doubtful, since it would only work as a calque of half of the term in Indo-Aryan where there are words for “net” such as Hindi जाल (jāl), जाली (jālī), Marathi जाळें (jāḷẽ), Punjabi جال (jāl). It may be instead from شَوْبَك (šawbak, “rolling pin”).
