Etymology

Uncertain. Maybe from Old South Arabian. Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya suggests it is a blend of ما +‎ هذا +‎ يا +‎ امرؤ.

      قال ﷺ يسأل عبد الرحمن بن عوف لما رآه متطيبا: مهيم يا عبد الرحمن؟ قال تزوجت امرأة من الأنصار.
      The prophet peace be upon him asked Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf when he saw him wearing perfume: How do you do, Abdulrahman? "I married an Ansari woman", he replied.
